Karma And Samsara The belief in Karma and Samsara form the basis for the Hindu's religious worldview. It has been central to Hinduism for thousands of years, and as a result forms a major part in the philosophical thinking of many Hindu's today. The ideas of Karma and Samsara are evident in almost all of the great Hindu scriptures, being touched on in the Veda's, but first properly introduced in the Upanishads. When the idea of Samsara was first introduced it led to a quest for liberation through the practice of austerity or meditation or both. To be released form this life the Hindu's needed to wipe out the effects of their past actions or Karma. It is this set of beliefs that formed the background of many of Hindu's religious movements and beliefs. Karma is the belief according to which a person's future life is determined by past and present actions. Every action, bodily, intellectual or ethical, good or bad, big or small will have its effect. Nothing other than the effects of earlier actions has determined the present state of affairs and nothing other than the present actions will determine the future circumstances. The law of Karma allows no room for chance or divine intervention as everything is inevitably determined by it. The Brhardaranyaka Upanisad simply sates "By good actions one becomes good, by bad actions one becomes bad"(4.4.5) (Koller 1982: 59). Intertwined with belief in Karma is the idea of Samsara, which is the cycle of repeated births and deaths that subjects an individual not merely to one death but to innumerable deaths (Koller 1982:9). Hindu's believe that as a person dies the Atman (the unconscious, immaterial part of a human) carries the results of their good and bad actions (Karma) into their next existence. This previous Karma will determine what sort of position a Hindu will occupy in their new existence, for example, if a person in a low caste has been very good in their past existence they will be born into a higher caste in their next life. The ideas of Karma and Samsara have justified the unequal Caste system, which has been an integral part of Indian society for hundreds of years. At the time of the Rig Veda (the earliest Hindu scriptures around 1000 B.C.E) (Smart 1989: 60) the key concepts of Karma and Samsara had not actually been stated. However, it does mention that a person's conduct in this world determines his life after death. The brahmins (the religious leaders) stressed the importance of the sacred act of sacrificing which was supposed to have a bearing on man's fate in the next world, and consequently the Satapatha Brahmana 11.1.8,6, states that "the Sacrifice becomes the self of the sacrificer in the next world"(Stutley 1985: 23). So, even at this early stage of Hinduism, the idea of Karma played an important role in the Hindu's worldview. It was not until the Upanishads (the principal ones dating from 800-400B.C.E) (Smart 1989:49) that we first meet with the doctrines of Karma and Samsara. The Upanishads are concerned essentially with the meaning of the sacrificial rites, and come to the conclusion that knowledge in the ?true reality' is the key rather than expertise in rituals like the Rig Veda's were. In the process they introduce profound metaphysical and religious ideas, such as Karma and Samsara. The Chandogya Upanisad sums up the ideas of Karma and Samsara "those who are of pleasant conduct here the prospect is indeed that they will enter a pleasant womb, either the womb of a Kshatriya or the womb of a Vaisya (high Indian Castes). But those who are of a striking conduct here the prospect is indeed, that, they will enter the womb of a dog, or the womb of a swine, or the womb of an outcast"(Lipner 1994: 45). The central concept in the Upanishads is that of Brahman. Brahman is the highest truth, the eternal being on which all other beings depend on. Brahman is the same as the atman, in other words, that ultimate being out there, is the same as that eternal something within you. The goal for many Hindus became at this time to gain Moksha (release from Samsara) which meant a person's atman would be released from the cycle of rebirth and therefore become one with the ultimate reality, Brahman, like a drop of water into an ocean. To understand the Hindus preoccupation with breaking the cycle of Samsara and gaining Moksha one must understand the Hindu's view of time and space.

In a perfect situation, where friction plays no part the ball will continue oscillating continuously. However in real life this is not possible, instead objects face damping due to friction. Any system which carrys a harmonic motion is known as an oscillator. Simple examples are a mass on the end of a vertical spring, a pendulum, or a trolley tethered between two springs. The amplitude of an oscillation is the maximum displacement of the system from the rest position. Hypothesis: In this experiment I will be changing the position from where I will be dropping the ball into the bowl from thus the amplitude will be changing. In my view the higher the amplitude would result in longer time for the ball to return to its original point of release at the maximum amplitude. This would result in a long period of time. For the movement of the ball in the bowl is caused by the inward push exerted by the surface of the bowl. Therefore by increasing the amplitude the time period will increase. Galileo was the first person that studied about pendulums and said about the property of them that the period is not dependent of the amplitude of the swing. But later on Christiaan Huygens found that if an object is going down a curve due to gravity and if period is independent of the amplitude then it should move through a cycloid curve instead of a circular one like in a pendulum. It supported the observation of Marin Mersenne who said that the period of a pendulum changes with its amplitude and Galileos observation was only correct for small amplitudes. In case of larger amplitudes, the period will increase with amplitude. Discussion : I have recorded four observations for each of the positions I dropped the ball from. This is because I wanted to make my experiment more accurate thus I decided to time the movement of the ball for four times for different amplitudes. Now for my next table, which I will use for the graph, I have to calculate the average of the 4 results for each amplitude but before that I divided each time recorded by the number of oscillations it made to find the time made by the ball for one oscillation. Here in this graph we can see that the period hardly changed so it means that the amplitude affected the period very minutely. We can notice that as the points dont have any link in between them. If we see the first 3 readings for 5,10,15 cm amplitudes, our hypothesis seems to be right as by increasing the amplitude the time period is increasing accordingly but if we notice the next 2 readings for 20,25cm amplitude, this rule does not apply . Conclusion: I find that the period did not increase because when we increase the amplitude it obviously means the tennis ball will be dropped from a higher position so thus it will gain more speed while falling down , therefore if the amplitude increases the speed also increases causing the tennisball to take just as long to complete a cycle as in the case of smaller amplitude. I didnt considered the friction of air. The friction caused the tennis balls speed to slow down and led to a decrease in the length of the arc through which it passed. Like if we take an example in which drop a ball from an angle of about 60 degrees within a short number of cycles the tennis ball will not move beyond an angle of 20 degress because of the friction so it is not a continous movement. The air friction is caused when the object moving through the air and has to move air molecules aside. Also the surface parallel to the direction of the motion of the object generates friction because when the molecules of the air which collide with the surface and are thus pushed in a forward direction by the collision. Therefore, I can conclude that the period was independant of the amplitude because the periods in all five cases differ very little from eachother. Evaluation: I felt that this experiment was accurate up to and extent however there were many things which we could have changed in our methods of doing this experiment to make it more accurate such as when we held the mat in the form of an arc shaped it was difficult to keep it the same throughout when the tennis ball was rolling so we could change this by placing the mat between a chair and the wall which would the mat into place this would make it impossible for the mat to move and the size to change even slightly so this could have cause us to get even more accurate results. Also the speed applied when I was dropping the tennis ball couldnt be measured so we can try to be more accurate to not apply any force, so the force applied wont affect the results. In over all in my view this experiment was properly planned, as we were able to finish it in a sufficient amount of time. To make our results accurate we tried our best by recording the time period 4 times for each of the 5 different amplitudes and then taking out the average. There were also problems when I dropped the ball in the mat it basically wobbled and moved from one side to the other and didnt just follow the same path while moving so this might have caused some inaccuracy in the results. We could have improved this by not using a mat but something else like a bowl to roll the ball in where circumference would stay same during the whole experiment. Follow up experiment: Since in this experiment we looked at the link between the amplitude and period, after this we can take the initiative to look and compare between two other properties. So we can look at the influence of changing the mass on the period. We can try placing different weights in a small cylindrical tube and then rolling it. The amplitude will remain the controlled variable in this case.

The article suggests that the use of strong fear appeal will be enough to provoke behavioural change and an awareness of the illness. A fear appeal is a technique used to persuade an audience into behaving in a particular way by arousing a fear of the consequences of not following the message given. The effect of fear appeals was studied by Janis and Feshback (1953). The second psychological assumption is that â€Å"the fashion industry and the obsession with stick-thin size zero models† is to blame for the increase in cases of anorexia. The article therefore suggests that people outside of the fashion industry perhaps idolise models who appear to be rewarded with fame and fortune for being stick-thin. It assumes people imitate these models’ behaviour in the hope of being like them. Research into vicarious learning was conducted by Bandura (1965) who consequently formed the social learning theory.  The third psychological assumption relates to the billboard designers’ decision to use a picture of a female anorexic and presumes that the majority, if not all, of anorexic sufferers are female. A study that explored the prevalence of anorexia among males and females was performed by Kjels et al (2003). 2. Evidence  Evidence opposing the first assumption was conducted by Janis and Feshback (1953), who studied the motivational effect of fear arousal in health promotion communication. The entire freshman class of a Connecticut high school was divided into 4 groups, 3 of which were given 15-minute lectures on tooth decay and oral hygiene, while the fourth acted as the control group. Each lecture had a different strength of fear appeal, and results showed that although strong fear resulted in greater immediate anxiety, the minimal fear group showed the largest changes in behaviour. The minimal fear group showed 36% behaviour change, whereas strong fear only showed 8%. This therefore opposes the view of the article that the image of the naked anorexic woman will cause the fashion industry to take action against the illness and, although it will have some effect, a minimal fear approach would be most successful. Evidence that supports the second assumption was provided by Albert Bandura (1965). Bandura showed three groups of children tapes of a man being aggressive towards a doll. The first group saw the man being rewarded for his actions, the second saw him being punished and the third were not shown any consequences. The children were then placed in a room with a similar doll and observed. Results of the study showed that children were significantly more likely to imitate aggressive behaviour when they had observed the model being rewarded. Bandura labelled this imitation â€Å"vicarious leaning.† This forms part of the social learning theory suggesting that behaviour is learnt through observation and imitation. This supports the second assumption as people observing models within the fashion industry witness them being rewarded for being thin with fame and fortune, and subsequently imitate their behaviour in order to gain the same rewards. They studied 1026 female and 934 male adolescents using DSM-IV and DSM-III-R criteria to establish the prevalence of eating disorders in both genders. Each participant was asked to complete a questionnaire, and results showed that while 17.9% of female participants had suffered anorexia at some point in their lifetime, 6.5% of males had also. The study concludes that although prevalence of anorexia nervosa is higher in females, males are also susceptible to the illness. Applications  In relation to the first assumption, Janis and Feshback would argue that instead of using shock tactics a more effective way of bringing about a change within the industry would be to provide people with information on the disease, and preventative measures. Leaflets and posters containing this information could be distributed to people within the industry itself, and perhaps to the public in order to provide awareness to the majority. This may however have little effect, as there is no guarantee that the information would be listened to by an industry out to gain profit. Bandura’s theory and study suggests that people learn anorexic behaviour from seeing underweight models in the media. Therefore, in relation to the second assumption, the number of anorexic cases could be decreased by ensuring that no model within the fashion industry is below certain measurements; for example, by preventing the use of size zero models. If people are exposed to healthier-looking models, people may develop healthier eating habits. This however assumes that size 0 models are ill, and could be perceived as discrimination against healthy individuals. There may be resistance against this motion from the fashion industry and models themselves. In relation to the third assumption, Kjelsà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s et al’s study suggests that males are also susceptible to anorexia. Therefore people need to be made aware of this to increase the perceived susceptibility, especially in males. Health promotion could include information on male anorexia, and contain pictures of male sufferers who are willing to share their stories. If awareness of anorexia in males is raised and the stereotype of it being a typically female disease scrapped, then the number of males who seek help will increase. However if males do not perceive themselves susceptible they are unlikely to choose to read the health promotion in the first place as they believe it to be a female disease.
